The 7 Different Chakras and How to Balance Them

There are 7 Chakras which work as energy centres in your body which energy flows through. Energy must flow freely through each channel or chakra in order to avoid illness. All 7 chakras are equally important in their own way, and each controls a specific function which is essential to a unique body system. If any of the chakras are blocked, this can inhibit health and impede energy flow. This can affect both the physical and emotional components of a person’s health and well-being. Therefore, it is important to keep the chakras working correctly through all areas. Understanding the 7 chakras is the key to beginning to heal yourself through chakra meditation and crystal healing.

The Seven Different Chakras

1. The Root Chakra

Earth Element

Root Chakra Affirmation: “I am safe in the world around me. I belong in this world, and am a part of Gaia (mother-earth). I am at peace with my surroundings, with the people and the events that occur.”

The Root Chakra is the foundation of our body, being the first chakra, and it is what keeps us grounded. It is located at the base of the spine, near the tailbone. It is what connects us to the physical world. There are a number of ways in which we can nurture our Root Chakra. As part of a balanced life, it’s important to give time and energy to ensuring your chakras are cleansed and opened. The Root Chakra should always be the first chakra you attend to. If you find yourself feeling confused or uncertain, it may be time to open and cleanse this important chakra. Yoga, Tai Chi and pilates are good movements to make the Root Chakra stronger as we focus on parts of the body one at a time.

This is a highly important chakra to maintain harmony within as it gives us inner security and identity of self. If we have a closed off Root Chakra, we feel insecure and tense. Our tension comes out as fear which can spin out of control and turn to feelings of terror. These waves of emotions can create a need to defend our own survival when there’s actually nothing to defend. Some signs that your Root Chakra is closed is restlessness, a lack of energy, unpredictable emotions, obsession and selfishness. Some of the crystals that assist in healing and opening the Root Chakra include Hematite, Black Obsidian, Garnet and Smoky Quartz. Foods that assist in healing our root chakra are red in color like apples or beets as well as red cayenne peppers. Ground vegetables like squash, potatoes and carrots. Eggs and red meat such as venison and beef are also recommended.

To allow us to better connect to the ground and thus strengthening our root chakra, there is a simple exercise you can do:

  • Start by standing straight with your feet shoulder-width apart
  • Bend your knees a little and pull your pelvis slightly forward
  • Focus on keeping balance, a good gauge for this is feeling that the soles of your feet have evenly distributed weight
  • Sink your feet downward. Some like to think of their feet as becoming rooted to the ground. You can visually roots coming out of your feet and becoming a part of the earth

Stay in this position for a few minutes at least and focus on the feeling of being grounded to the earth. Inhale and exhale. Be in the moment.

When your Root Chakra is balanced, you will feel secure and life’s tasks will take little effort. The doubts you may have experienced in the past will vanish from your life. You will manifest things easily and there is little that will go wrong. If something should go wrong, you will be able to cope with it and turn it into something beautiful. The quality of the life that you live will improve greatly when you nurture the Root Chakra. You will become a part of the universe and it’s energy once again, making you feel complete.

2. The Sacral Chakra

Water Element

Sacral Chakra Affirmation: “I am a sensual and creative being”

The svadisthana or sacral chakra is the seat of emotions and is the centre for our experiences that are associated with love and hate. This chakra receives all of the universal energy that filters through the root chakra. The sacral chakra is located near the pelvis and seeks pleasure and enjoyment of life. It has an influence on how we express our emotions and make decisions.

When it is balanced, we are easily able to express emotions without being over-emotional. With the opening of the sacral chakra, we unleash our passion, intimacy and sexuality. It is something like a magnet which attracts our reality. Feelings and thoughts that are stored in the sacral chakra mirror our life experiences. This chakra is very powerful in the sense of your reality, whether for the good or bad. It can allow us to either live a very happy life with the ability to accept change or it can make everyday an uphill battle.

When the sacral chakra is unbalanced, addiction may be one of the major signs. Healthy relationships start to dwindle as our need for love goes unmet. Blocks such as lack of creativity, lower sex drive and infertility may arise when the sacral chakra is closed off. We lose our ambition and drive for life while resisting any change that occurs. An overactive sacral chakra can make us create drama. There will be an unhealthy attachment to people and an expectation that can’t be met by those we love. Physical tension of the muscles can be a sign that we aren’t in balance. If this chakra is under-active, there may be signs of negativity and becoming withdrawn from intimacy. We close ourselves off to possibilities and people that mean the most to us. We feel like we don’t fit into society and likely begin to recluse. Body manifestations can include irregular menstruation cycles, urinary and kidney infections.

There are a few ways in which we can begin to balance the sacral chakra. Some stones that assist in the healing include; Hematite, Amber, Citrine, Jasper and Topaz. Recommended foods include cinnamon, strawberries, coconuts, oranges and water. Being near running water such as a creek or a waterfall is a powerful healing tool for the sacral chakra. The colour that represents the sacral chakra is orange and can be healing to have near you in times of reclusion.

Here is an exercise that allows our sacral chakra to open.

  1. Sit in a comfortable position as though you were going to meditate.
  2. Inhale as you push the tip of your spine backwards, this open the front of the sacrum and expands the lower belly.
  3. Imagine that you are stretching your hips as wide as possible.
  4. Exhale and move your sacrum forwards, pressing the naval back towards the spine.

Do this cycle for 30 seconds and move comfortably with your breath.

An open and balanced sacral chakra is designed to produce happiness, healthy sensuality, ambition and creativity. You will benefit greatly by seeing the positive realities available to you while enjoying fulfilling relationships and events. Your life will flow like that of a creek that simply moves fluidly, without obstruction.

3. The Solar Plexus Chakra

Fire Element

Root Chakra Affirmation: “I accept the power of my being to produce health, love and joy in my life.”

The third chakra sits above our naval and reaches to the solar plexus and it is the centre of our body and being. Manipura translates to the “City of Gems” indicating that in our body we house many precious jewels. Clarity, bliss, self-assurance, knowledge, wisdom and our ability to make the right decisions. This chakra controls our energy balance which gives good health to us. If there are block in this chakra, we may have a difficult time staying healthy and overcoming any health issues. The lotus flower is the symbol of the third chakra and contains ten petals. The pets represent the ten Pranas which are said to nourish the functions of our body. Within the symbolic image there is also an arrow pointing down. This is an indication of the spreading of your personal growth and development within the body.

When the solar plexus chakra is activated, we are free from negative energy and our vitality is pure. The passion we have becomes selfless love for example and we become more respectful and understanding of others. This in turn gives us the respect and understanding we deserve from others. The gut feelings we have are strongly connected to the third chakra. Signs that your solar plexus chakra is not balanced include being critical of others, being dissatisfied with results no matter how good they are. You may avoid feelings of depression and anxiety further perpetuating your negative mental state. Crystals that can assist in the healing and opening of the third chakra include; Jasper, Tiger’s Eye, Citrine and Rhodochrosite. As the colour associated with this chakra is yellow, foods that are yellow in colour are highly recommended such as bananas. Other foods that nurture the body and chakra are grains, seeds, dairy products such as yogurt and spices like chamomile and ginger.

Assisting in the healing of the Manipura chakra is a simple exercise of visualisation. Close your eyes, relax and visualise a brilliant yellow sunflower directly over this chakra. Use some aromatherapy with citrusy scents while meditating specific poses also assist. Recommended poses include; sideways bends towards your toes, Heros Pose and Sitting on the Heels Pose.

When the Manipura chakra is balanced, the centre of yourself is happier and more balanced in general. You have a sweetness to you which makes people want to be close to you. You are at peace with the world and ultimately with yourself. The decisions you make are rational and you generally appreciate every moment.

4. The Heart Chakra

Element-Air

Heart Chakra Affirmation: “Love is the answer to everything. I am an infinite being full of Divine Love, which I give freely and openly accept from others!”

The heart chakra is the spring within us that feels love, compassion and joy. The heart chakra allows you to have deep connections with others and allow you to care about others. If your heart chakra is open and cleansed, you naturally love yourself and are generous with your emotions. This chakra is what makes you feel whole and allows for true bliss to occur in your life. Known to the sajes, love is the most powerful healing force and so the heart chakra is considered our “healing centre.”

The energy surrounding the heart chakra helps us to see that we are a part of the world and fully connected. When you have this knowledge and belief within you, so many of your fears flow away from you. The way of the heart is a term that explains how living your life from the heart chakra energy brings you deep truths. You live with loving kindness towards yourself and others, experiencing a deep peace. When you live from this energy, you are no longer afraid, you feel completely safe and protected. This energy is so powerful that it touches people around you. They feel your warmth and love without a word spoken, they feel safe with you.

If you’re feeling shy or not open to the world with a sense of loneliness, these are signs the heart chakra is closed. You may also feel little empathy in times that you should which could indicate you’re using your head more than your heart. An overactive heart chakra often means you’re lead by negative emotions like greed, sadness and grief. An underactive heart chakra may lead you to feel like the world is against you which in turn becomes manifested by your deep beliefs. This chakra is essential to your feeling of well being for yourself and the world. Nurturing your heart chakra means filling your life with the color green whenever possible. Picture the color green in the centre of your chest when you practice yoga or meditation. Having candles, plants and pictures that incorporate green that we see in nature eases and balances the heart. Foods that help nurture both the body and soul include green vegetables like broccoli and lettuce. Crystals that are best in healing and cleansing the heart chakra include Rose Quartz, Green Aventurine, Green Tourmaline, Malachite and Emeralds.

An exercise you can use to help open, heal and cleanse your heart chakra is being outside. Listen to the breeze, lay in the grass and watch the clouds move. Being near anything green in nature is deeply healing for the heart.

While all the chakras are essential to our well being, the heart chakra could be said to be the most important. Love is the force of our true self and the way we can be most in touch with every piece of positive energy. To be open to all forms of love reaches the deepest part of ourselves and allows everything in us to connect and feel joy.

The colour associated with the throat chakra is blue, so surround yourself with anything blue. Crystals that assist in the healing of the throat chakra include:  Lapis Lazuli, Aquamarine, Sodalite, Turquoise, Tanzanite and Blue Tourmaline. So it is great to wear gemstone jewellery with those crystals to balance your throat chakra. Foods that assist in the healing of the throat chakra should be considered fuel for the energy within you. To strengthen and cleanse the throat chakra, there is a quick and easy breathing exercise you can do.

2          Let it out slowly.

3          Repeat this just a few times daily to restore the flow of your throat chakra
