Being mindful is just so important – I guess that’s clear to all of us. But how do we get there? How do we become more mindful? How can we be truly in the moment? In our daily life we are constantly distracted and more often than not, we have thoughts and worries either about the past or in the future. But life happens now! There are so many errands to run, boring tasks to get done that we often doubt whether there are enough hours in the day. However, even during these tasks, we can practise being mindful.
3 quick mindfulness tips for you to get started today:
1. The Waiting Game
How often do we have to wait for something? Do you take the bus or train to work? Do you find yourself in queue or waiting in a coffee shop for your friends? Next time when you are in a situation in which you have to wait and forgot a good book to read – practise being mindful. Take the time as a chance to slow down and try to relax. Focus on your breathing. Inhale. Exhale. But do it consciously. Be attentive to your emotions. How do you feel just now? Let it all be, just accept them as part of you. Everything is fine. Everything will be fine.
2. Food and Drinks
Don’t just eat your food in front of the television or while you are going somewhere. Eat and drink consciously. Focus on the colours of the food, really taste it and feel how it gives your body the energy you need. You could also do a little meditation exercise and imagine how, for instance, the tomato arrived at your plate. Think of how it grew, what kind of weather the tomato experienced, what it would have felt like if the tomato could think?
3. At Work
Yes, you may be stressed out and are worrying about work related things – but then, it is only work. Unless you are a doctor saving someone’s life or have a similar profession, your work is just work. Distance yourself from it. Don’t let any frustration you have in the office affect how you feel or affect your inner happiness. Do the best you can and it is fine. Understanding this should already make yourself feel more relaxed and less stressed out. In addition, take a little walk during your work day, e.g. while you get a coffee or food outside. The walk only has to be a few minutes. But take this walk to feel every step you take. To breathe the air consciously. What kind of air are you breathing? Don’t judge, just accept – consciously. Do you pass by people? Look at them, do they look like they are stressed, happy? Experience your environment. Look up to the sky. You are on planet earth in the universe, you are the designer of your own life – isn’t that incredible?
